Common Questions
How many downlights do I need in a room?
As a rough starting point, one downlight per square metre to a metre and a half of floor area, kept about 600–900mm from the walls so you light the room rather than the skirting. We would rather plan the layout with you against how the room is actually used — worktops, mirrors and seating all change the answer — than fit a symmetrical grid that leaves you working in your own shadow.
Can you fit lights without an existing ceiling rose?
Yes. New lighting points can be run from the existing lighting circuit, and where a ceiling is inaccessible we can often feed from above or use a surface route hidden in coving. We will tell you honestly before we start what will need lifting or opening and what will not.
Do I need an electrician to install outdoor lighting?
For anything wired into the fixed installation, yes — outdoor circuits must be RCD-protected and are notifiable work under Part P. Plug-in festoon lighting on an existing outdoor socket is not, but the socket itself must be a proper weatherproof outdoor one, not an indoor socket with a cover on it.
Are LED downlights safe to fit in an insulated ceiling?
Only if they are rated for it. Older non-fire-rated fittings covered with loft insulation are a genuine fire risk and also breach the ceiling's fire barrier. We fit fire-rated, insulation-coverable LED units as standard, which keeps both the fire rating and the insulation intact.
