Anyone can call themselves an electrician. These are the registrations Billy actually holds, and what each one means for you.
Part P Registered
Part P of the Building Regulations covers electrical safety in homes. Certain work — a new consumer unit, a new circuit, anything in a bathroom — is 'notifiable' and legally has to be signed off.
What it means for you: Billy self-certifies that work and notifies Building Control for you. No separate inspection to arrange, no council fee, no unsigned-off work waiting to surface in your sale.
NAPIT Approved Contractor
NAPIT is a government-authorised Competent Person Scheme. Membership is assessed, not bought: work is inspected on a rolling basis and registration is withdrawn if standards drop.
What it means for you: An independent body has checked Billy's work to BS 7671, and keeps checking it. If something ever went wrong, there is a scheme behind the job, not just a tradesman.
Every job finishes with the paperwork to prove it: an Electrical Installation Certificate for notifiable work, and Building Control notified on your behalf. You will be asked for these when you sell, remortgage or renew your insurance.
